Japanese Wood-Block Printing Editorial Layout

This was a school project to take content and create a two page spread in InDesign choosing appropriate typography, images and layout. I started by reading the entire article and choosing parts that I thought would stand out well for the pull quote. I then sourced Creative Commons photos that related to the article, and began to create sketches of the layout possibilities. I chose two images of separate art pieces to use that had similar color schemes to carry throughout the rest of the layout.

A three column layout would be best for this design as it allows for easier reading of the content. I chose two fonts, a sans-serif for the title heading and a serif for the body copy and subheading. I also used this same font in a different weight and style for the pull quote. A drop cap is used in the first paragraph to show the reader where to begin and is in a shade of orange pulled from the art piece above it.
